ReplyDeleteNo, the iPhone will not work in India, because it'll be locked to Cingular.
And you can only buy the iPhone with a two year contract from Cingular. So it might be better if you saved your monry till the iPhone is released in India.

ReplyDeleteThe price of an iPhone will be $499 and $599 for a 4GB and 8GB capacity phone and that does not include the cost of the contract with AT&T which could depend on the type of Data Plan you choose.
The iPhone is expected to arrive in Europe by the end of this year and in Asia in 2008 and it may even have 3G capability.
I'm sure Apple wont forget the fastest growing mobile market in the world.
Look on the bright side, with so much time on your hands, you have more time to start saving money for the iPhone :)
Paul...technically, yes..an iPhone in the US would be locked onto Cingular, but it's possible (and increasingly easy) to pick up "unlocked" phones in India and South-East Asia...I've seen quite a few people here in India walking around with unlocked Treos and BlackBerrys which still bear the Cingular / Sprint logos...personally though, I'd rather wait for the original instrument to hit the Indian market.

you can unlock it online using Iphonesimfree.com... for 45$.. that makes it totally around 18K for 8GB model
if you are not sure of unlocking it yourself then check ebay.in where there are number of people who will unlock it for you for less than 2K

Of course it will cost a lot more than 199$. That is only the price that consumers have to pay while activating a contract in the US with At&t. It is estimated that Apple receives another 300 $ from the service providers.

Try it with 500$, the price will therefore be at least around 22 000 INR for the 8GB version.
I am from India and currently in Europe and have an option to buy an iphone here since I have residence permit of Netherlands. But I will be returning back to India in October.What if I buy it and unlock in India? Will there be some legal problems from Tmobile? Because iphone is available at very low cost here but I have to pay monthly installments till 2 years which I won't be paying after I am back to India.
