Financial Express:Dec 13 2006 Bharti Airtel Ltd, Reliance Communications Ltd and other Indian mobile-phone operators accelerated subscriber growth in November, adding a record 6.79 million users, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) said.
The increase in India, the world's fastest growing wireless market, beat the previous month's 6.71 million, bringing the total number of cell-phone users to 143.02 million by the end of November, according to Trai. The number of fixed-line users declined 50,000 to 40.51 million, the regulator said on Wednesday. Bharti Airtel and Reliance Communications, India's two biggest cell-phone operators, have reported higher earnings as low-cost handsets such as Motorola Inc's Motofone boosted usage. Penetration of telephone services increased to 16.6% of India's 1.1 billion population in November, from 11% a year earlier, Trai said.
